Citation:

On 13 December 1948 in Tithwal, enemy attacked A Coy position. Major Sardara Singh was in command of this company. The attack was supported by heavy concentration of 25 pounders, 3.7 (How) and Mortar fire. This did not deter this brave officer who went from place to place encouraging his men till the attack was beaten off: Due to shelling most of the forward bunkers had collapsed and there were a lot of casualties. Major Sardara Singh was going from place to place, ordering the evacuation of serious cases and organising the defence again. He also directed fire of our own supporting weapons on to the enemy concentration preparing for another attack. Throughout the day the enemy put in eight attack and fired about 2 to 3 thousand shells and bombs but this officer proved more than a match for them. He was ready every time with defence re-organised and supporting fire directed on to the enemy, resulting in the failure of the enemy with very heavy losses.

Throughout Major Sardara Singh was an example of coolness under very trying conditions. But for the lead given by this officer and his right appreciation of the situation, the position would have been over-run by the enemy.
