Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad

Citation:

On 4 February 1948, Subedar Sardul Singh led a patrol of 20 to village Bohali on the Pakistan border. In an encounter, the patrol killed five of the enemy. In its effort to retrieve bodies, enemy reaction was so violent that the patrol had to withdraw. Subedar Sardul Singh himself covered the withdrawal along with LMG No. 1 till every single man in his patrol was withdrawn further back. He carried on the withdrawal for about a mile in spite of heavy fire. Meanwhile the enemy had mustered vast numerical and fire superiority and closed up. While standing up and pointing to his Bren gunner a target, Subedar Sardul Singh was hit in his right arm. This by no means dampened his spirit and he ordered the gunner to withdraw further back and cover his subsequent withdrawal. While the gunner was taking up a new position, he kept on firing his sten gun with his left hand and helped the gunner to withdraw. While withdrawing he was hit in the neck and was killed. 

By his leadership, cool courage, correct anticipation of the situation and supreme sacrifice, Subedar Sardul Singh enabled the rest of the patrol to withdraw, thus saving many lives.
