Citation:

Charlie Company 12 JAK Light Infantry was tasked to capture Point 4812, a feature of immense tactical importance in Batalik Sector in Jammu & Kashmir on the night of 30th June/Ist July 1999. Havildar Satish Chander was the leading section commander of the column. The column approached the feature from enemy's rear and with a total surprise gained foothold on the feature. Alerted, the enemy opened up with small arms and brought down heavy artillery fire on the column. 

Undeterred Havildar Satish Chander closed in with the enemy and lobbed grenades in its sangar, killing two of its soldiers. He sustained splinter injury in his leg but refused to be evacuated. Displaying excellent section tactics, he moved from sangar to sangar clearing up stiff enemy opposition. This resulted in killing off our more enemy soldiers and forced others to withdraw resulting in the capture of point 4812.

Havildar Satish Chander displayed exemplary leadership, determination and courage of a most exceptional order in the face of the enemy.
