Citation:

A post at an altitude of 18,000 feet on the Saltore ridge in the Siachen Glacier area was held by a section strength of a unit of the jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. Towards the south of the post was the adversary's Heavy Machine Gun Post from where they launched a determined attack with approximately battalion strength of elite troops on our posts on the night of23 September, 1987. The adversary's troops kept relentless pressure on the post by assaulting in waves.

Havildar Sat Paul, the post commander was personally manning the Medium Machine Gun and simultaneously directing effective fire of Rocket Launchers to blunt the adversary's attack. Though a bunker next to him was blown off with a direct hit, he remained unruffled and courageously kept on firing his Medium Machine Gun and directing the Rocket Launcher till he was seriously wounded and became unconscious and had to be evacuated. Havildar Sat Paul thus displayed conspicuous gallantry in the face of adversary.
