Citation:

On 16 December 1971, Captain Satish Chander Sehgal was the forward observation post officer with an armoured regiment in the Shakargarh Sector. The leading squadron was manoeuvring across the Saraj Chak forest when it came across enemy tanks which were being withdrawn behind a smokescreen into the Gazipur forest about two hundred yards away. Captain Sehgal immediately engaged them effectively with large crumps of medium artillery fire, neutralising the tank concentration. Seeing an enemy tank at the edge of the forest attempting to escape, he destroyed the fleeing tank with his observation post tank gun. His own tank was hit and it caught fire. With utter disregard for his safety he along with his radio operator, helped to extricate the driver and gunner from the burning tank. While doing so, he was hit by an enemy machine gun as a result of which he died.

In this action, Captain Sehgal displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
