Citation:

On 5 February 1988, during an operation in area Tunnukkai, Captain Jaideep Sengupta, Troop Commander Number 3 Assault Troop was tasked to conduct a search-and-destroy mission on Road Tunnukkai-Mankulem. Despite heavy automatic fire of the militants, he personally led a small party of five men and successfully out-flanked the militants. He suffered severe wounds in his stomach, chest and thigh, caused by automatic rifle and grenade fire.

Undaunted by these wounds and heavy loss of blood, he maintained constant pressure on the militants, pinning them down by fire while manoeuvring another squad of five men behind their position. It was only after the militants had fled, leaving behind their dead that Captain Sengupta allowed himself to be evacuated. Captain Jaideep Sengupta displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants and exemplary leadership.
