Citation:

On 8 July 1999, "A" Company commanded by Lieutenant Deepankar Kapoor Singh Sharawat was tasked to raid a mortar position west of 'Twin Bump', which had been causing havoc on own troops. Lieutenant Sharawat moved towards the mortar position with his company with stealth using tactical acumen beyond his years. Exhibiting undaunted courage and total disregard to personal safety he stormed the mortar position killing one enemy soldier personally in a hand-to-hand fight. His cold and audacious action led to the recovery of three 120 mm mortars, two 81 mm mortars and three G-3 rifles besides hordes of valuable documents and equipment. This raid broke the backbone of the enemy intrusion in the Mashkoh valley and led to their ultimate withdrawal. The valour, leadership qualities and personal example displayed by the officer inspired and encouraged his troops who killed three other enemy soldiers and captured the mortar position intact thus dealing a mortal blow on the adversary.

Lieutenant Deepankar Kapoor Singh Sharawat displayed sustained cold courage, exemplary professional competence and selfless service beyond the call of duty in the face of the enemy.
