Citation:

Captain Diresh Kumar Sharma was employed as the observation post officer with a battalion of Punjab Regiment in the Hussainiwala Sector. On 3 December 1971, the enemy engaged our defences with heavy automatic fire and intense shelling Undeterred, Captain Sharma continued to engage enemy targets till his post was destroyed by enemy tank fire. Showing fortitude and determination, he extricated his party from the debris and established another observation post nearby to blunt repeated enemy attacks on our positions. 

In this action, Captain Sharma displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
