Citation:

Naik Shatrughan Singh formed part ofthe assault group for capture of Point 4268 in Batalik Sub-sector ofJammu & Kashmir on 29 May 1999. During the assault Naik Shatrughan Singh was in the forefront and continued fighting despite heavy enemy firing and shelling. When two of his comrades succumbed to their injuries, Naik Shatrughan Singh, with utter disregard to his personal safety, safely dragged the bodies to a safer place. In the process he sustained bullet injuries in his right leg and was immobilised. He continued to provide covering fire to help his other team members, who were injured, to move to safety. He shot dead two enemy mercenaries who were relentlessly firing on these jawans. He refused to accompany the others to safety as he felt that he would jeopardise their safety because he could not walk.

Naik Shatrughan Singh sustained himself without food and water for 11 days within 100 metres of the enemy post and when it became obvious that link up was not possible, the Non-Commissioned Officer crawled from cover-to-cover for over three kilometres and reached the firm base safely with his personal weapons, ammunition of light machine gun and the documents " recovered from the enemy soldier whom he had shot dead. Naik Shatrughan Singh displayed rare courage, conspicuous bravery and exceptional motivation in the face of the enemy
