Citation:

On 9 April1948, while advancing to Rajouri, Lance Naik Sher Singh was in command of a section of platoon, which had been ordered to capture a high feature near village Chakli. Charging up the hillside the men from his section fell victim to enemy grenades which were being freely thrown. This did not deter him in the least and he continued his advance with even increased fervor. Later a bullet hit him in the face but this gallant and determined NCO felt that if he stopped to nurse his wound, it might seriously hamper the advance of his men. He carried on, therefore, bleeding profusely until the objective was captured.

His act of supreme cold courage and devotion to duty were an example to all his men.
