Operation: 1971 Cactus Lily

Citation:

On the night of 11 December 1971, Paratrooper Vaijnath Shinge was with the rocket launcher detachment of a company of Parachute Regiment, which was occupying a position in the Eastern Sector. Just as the troops reached their positions, an enemy convoy was seen approaching the position. Paratrooper Shinge fired upon a vehicle as a result ofwhich a 120-mm mortar was destroyed and 23 enemy personnel were killed. Following up this action, he continued firing into the enemy causing heavy casualties. Occupying the forward most trench in the locality, he bore the brunt of the determined assaults on his platoon. When his platoon commander came forward to his trench, he was injured. Paratrooper Shinge, regardless of his personal safety, got out of the trench and brought him to safety. Though he was hit by an enemy bullet, he stuck to his post until the enemy attack was repulsed.

In this action, Paratrooper Shinge displayed gallantry, determination and devotion duty ofa high order.
