On 19 November 1948, Naik Shiv Ram's section was leading a column at night to capture Khanetar Gali, When his section was within 100 yards of the objective, the enemy opened up heavy automatic and rifle grenade fire in which one OR was killed and another wounded.

Naik Shiv Ram, in complete disregard of his personal safety, rushed straight into the enemy forward position, killed two and made the enemy Bren gunner run away. Thus he opened the way for the rest of the column to charge in strength. The enemy was overpowered and began to run in disorder. Naik Shiv Ram followed them with a torch in his hand and helped to capture two prisoners with arms. 

The next day Naik Shiv Ram was detailed on a reconnaissance patrol to Khanetar Nullah where he ran into an enemy ambush. Finding himself surrounded by a strong enemy, Naik Shiv Ram did not lose courage and initiative; instead he bolstered the morale of his men and personally led the counter attack with such dash that made the enemy give way. In this encounter, the enemy suffered many casualties and a JCO was captured alive with rifle by Naik Shiv Ram. 

On both occasions, this fearless NCO exhibited outstanding gallantry, inspiring leadership and devotion to duty.
