Awardee: Nk Sohan Singh, VrC

Gazette Notification: 2 Pres 50, 26-1-50
Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 18 Apr 1948

During an attack on our picquet at Kumaon Gosha, Lance Naik Sohan Singh was in one of the forward most posts. In the early hours of the morning of 16April1948, the enemy opened up close to the picquet with automatic and 3-inch mortar fire. The battle lasted 48 hours during which period the enemy heavily sniped and shelled our picquet. Cooked food was out of question and water replenishment to the posts became a problem. During the night the enemy brought up 2-inch mortar hardly 100 yards from Lance Naik Sohan Singh's position. Lance Naik Sohan Singh accurately engaged the enemy mortar and killed enemy's Mortar No.1. He was mainly responsible during the night of 16April for repulsing the enemy attack, which followed shortly after heavy 3-inch mortar shelling.

Throughout the battle, Lance Naik Sohan Singh stood up at his post, fought with determination and zeal, thus setting an excellent example to his section.
