Citation:

13 Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry was tasked to undertake a heliborne operation and capture the Jaffna University Campus. In consequent on the landing of barely one platoon of Delta Company of which Sepoy Sukhwant Singh was a member of the heliborne operation had to be called off since all the available helicopters had been severely hit by enemy fire. The link-up had then to be established on foot. The intended link up did not materialise for unexpected heavy interference. The gallant platoon of Delta Company continued to resist the enemy till the last man last round.
