Citation:

Captain Gopalam Lakshminarayana Swamy was the officer in charge of the advance dressing station in an area in the Shakargarh Sector. On 16 December 1971, he was informed that the officer commanding and the RMO of an infantry battalion had died in enemy action and 67 casualties were lying in the field unattended. He immediately volunteered to go to the location. Enroute, he was forced to abandon his ambulance car owing to intense shelling, but undeterred he took his surgical haversack and proceeded on foot. He reached the battalion location and, despite enemy artillery and small arms fire, moved from trench to trench attending to the casualties without respite till he had rendered medical aid to all the casualties and arranged for their evacuation to the advance dressing station.

In this action, Captain Swamy displayed gallantry and devotion to duty of a high order.
