Citation:

During the attackon the Chaubutra feature in the Zojila Pass area on 13 and 14 September 1948, 2nd Lieutenant Thandi Ram was in command of the leading company. On 14 September, he led his company over a slippery snow bed, which entailed a descent of 2,000 feet into a nullah followed by sheer climb of an equal height. As the attack progressed, heavy and accurate MMG and automatic fire from the enemy pinned down a platoon: Under deadly enemy fire, he organised his men into a defensive position to counteract the enemy fire. He stuck to his position and personally directed the fire and encouraged his men. 

The enemy made determined and repeated attacks to outflank and annihilate not only his party but also personnel of Tactical HQ who were about 50 yards on a flank. But 2nd Lieutenant Thandi Ram held on and continued to resist. He withdrew to the camp at night, bringing with him his men and all the wounded.

It was due to this officer's action that Tactical HQ could withdraw safely and about 50 wounded men were evacuated.
