Naik Hom Bahadur Thapa of 4th Gorkha Rifles was inducted with his company into Bilafondla Complex in the Siachen Glacier area. On the night of 23 September 1987, the enemy troops started heavy shelling on the post and simultaneously launched an attack. Undeterred he, as Light Machine Gun Detachment Commander, continued to give accurate fire support to his platoon thus beating back the adversary's attack.

Again, on the night of24 September 1987, enemy troops launched a determined attack on the post at 1850 hours. In spite of heavy artillery shelling and missile fire, he continued giving accurate fire support to his platoon. At about 0300 hours, the enemy troop launched another attack, during which crew members of his detachment were hit and he himself was injured on the right shoulder. With conspicuous courage, he took over the light machine gun personally and started engaging the adversary's troops. When the enemy was very close, he got out of this trench and started firing the light machine gun from his hip. He received a severe bullet injury on his right wrist, and later had to be evacuated.

Naik Hom Bahadur Thapa displayed gallantry in the presence of adversary's troops.
