Citation:

Subedar Prem Bahadur Thapa was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian peacekeeping Force. On 13 October 1987, Subedar Prem Bahadur Thapa was covering the column extricating para Commandos. When Major NJD Singh, his Company Commander, was hit by the militants' bullets, this Junior Commissioned Officer rushed forward, under a hail of bullets, to come to the aid of Major Singh. Unable to persuade his seriously wounded Company Commander to disengage from baffle and seek shelter, the Junior Commissioned Officer, in the best traditions of loyalty and comradeship, joined in the fray, causing heavy losses to the militants. His Company Commander died and the Junior Commissioned Officer tenaciously held the ground till the militants gave up.

Subedar Prem Bahadur Thapa displayed conspicuous courage and vital leadership in the face of militants.
