Citation:

Rifleman Rajendra Bahadur Thapa was a member of the force tasked for a cordon-and-search mission of village Pannai, approximately one mile east of Vellankulam in Sri Lanka on the night of 16 March 1988. Although heavily surrounded by armed militants, who continuously kept firing at his position, Rifleman Thapa remained undeterred and kept them all at bay, single-handed for17 hours. In the intense exchange of fire which ensued, Rifleman Thapa killed two hard-core militants and wounded a few others.

Rifleman Rajendra Bahadur Thapa, thus, displayed exemplary courage in the face of the militants.
