Lieutenant Anup Verma was second-in-command of the IMSF team which, along with 12 Para Commandos, was tasked to reinforce the security of Jaffna port and to secure and hold the Navanturai coastal road for the safe and speedy link-up of 41 Brigade with 1 Maratha Light Infantry. The team was also assigned to break out from Jaffana port to market and town hall. The IMSF team broke out from Jaffana fort at 1100 hours on 19 October 1987 negotiating a heavily mined road and booby traps laid by
the militants. It also came under heavy militant firing from buildings and rooftops. Lieutenant Verma, by his personal example of bravery, motivated his men to secure the area, which resulted in the link-up of the Brigade with 1 Maratha Light Infantry.
Again on 20 October, he was instrumental in destroying strongly defended militants' bases which were used by the militants for storing of supplies, arms and ammunition and also for escape. On 21 October, his team destroyed six speedboats and Guru Nagar Jetty by detonating under water-charges. On the night of 23 October 1987, he was tasked to destroy militant's boats in Jaffana lagoon. In order to achieve an element of surprise, he swam over one mile under water and successfully planted explosive charges under eleven speedboats kept ready for escape of hard-core militants. Despite heavy militant fire, Lieutenant Verma at grave risk to his life led his men to fulfill the task assigned to him.
The exceptional devotion to duty, gallantry and utter disregard to personal safety, displayed by Lieutenant Anup Verma was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Navy.
