Citation:

On 19 September 1965, Major Vijay Kumar was commanding a company of Maratha Regiment. The battalion was ordered to deal with the enemy who was trying to advance and outflank our forces from the position at Chathanwala. During the attack, the assaulting company came under heavy enemy fire. Undaunted, Major Vijay Kumar continued encouraging his men to go ahead with the assault. During the encounter, Major Vijay Kumar was very seriously injured by a burst of enemy MMG fire, but he dragged himself along with the company and continued to inspire his men till the task assigned to the company was accomplished.

In this action, Major Vijay Kumar displayed exemplary courage, determination and devotion to duty.
