Citation:

Naik Hoshiar Singh Yadav was section commander assigned the task of defending a hill picquet in J & K, which the enemy was planning to capture. On 25 January 1948, some 200 strong enemy troops, supported by mortars and machine guns, attacked his picquet, seriously injuring four of his men including Bren 1 & 2.

Naik Yadav immediately took the Bren gun and started crawling towards a better position from where he could check the advance of the enemy. However, the enemy spotted his movements and injured him severely. Unmindful of his injuries he kept on firing until the situation came under control.
