On 4 August 1948 in the Chakothi sector in Kashmir the hostiles concentrated shellfire on one of our positions. The gun crew engaged the enemy guns and a sharp duel took place. The hostiles fired over200 shells within an hour. Gunner Veil Muthu, who was the layer of the gun, was hit by a flying splinter when an enemy shell burst only a yard away from his position. He was half blinded as blood poured from his forehead into his eyes. But he continued to lay the gun and fire at the enemy.
He stuck to his post in complete disregard for his personal safety until he was wounded again and had to be carried away. His devotion to duty and extreme courage was an inspiration to all comrades.
